Drie Romeinse legionairs komen vanuit het roerige Brittannië voor hun rust naar Nijmegen, van daaruit worden ze op missie gestuurd en veroorzaken eigenhandig de Bataafse Opstand.

Zie hier de samenvatting van het eerste deel van de nieuwe stripreeks “De Romeinen”. Het album verscheen in april 2023 en was binnen drie maanden uitverkocht. De Romeinen is een nieuw initiatief, het begin van een reeks stripboeken over het Romeinse Rijk, waarvoor we de inspiratie uit onze eigen Romeinse geschiedenis halen.

In het kort voor wie het heeft gemist:

Aan het begin van de jaartelling was het machtige Romeinse Rijk heer en meester over een groot deel van Europa. De meest noordelijke grens liep langs de Rijn en was onderdeel van de Neder-Germaanse limes.

Langs de traag stromende rivier en in drassige veenmoerassen werden zo goed en zo kwaad als het ging tientallen wachttorens, legerkampen en havens gebouwd. Er ontstonden steden en dorpjes en een levendige handel met de lokale bevolking. Na bijna vijfhonderd jaar van aanwezigheid verlieten de Romeinen ons land weer. De oude wachttorens vielen om, klei uit de rivieren bedekte de wegen en tempels en op de fundamenten van de legerkampen werden nieuwe steden gebouwd.

Als het stof is neergedaald:

Tweeduizend jaar later is er weinig meer te zien van het grootste archeologische monument van Nederland, maar door onze unieke zuurstofarme bodem zijn er veel overblijfselen in de grond bewaard gebleven. Iedere potscherf en goed bewaarde houten paal is een puzzelstukje van een verhaal dat nog steeds geschreven wordt.

Verhalen vertellen in plaatjes:

Als verhalenverteller gebruik ik de kracht van beeld. Met een team van tekenaars en schrijvers maken we stripverhalen en ontsluiten het verleden in plaatjes voor een groot publiek.

We werken samen met historici en archeologen om een zo correct mogelijk beeld te geven van de oudheid, zonder dat dit een goed verhaal in de weg zit. De uniformen moeten kloppen, de huizen, de lokale kledingdracht en natuurlijk de historische gebeurtenissen. Bij een album maken we een educatief magazine, waarmee we duiding geven aan de gebeurtenissen in de strip, verhalen vertellen over archeologische opgravingen en dieper ingaan op de situatie en tijd.

De Bataafse Opstand is een verhaal dat ons inspireerde, maar er liggen er nog veel meer. De volgende delen zitten al in de pen, waarbij we zullen aanschuiven bij de conflicten die de Friese Opstand hebben veroorzaakt, om vervolgens naar het zuiden af te dwalen voor een avontuur in Valkenburg (zh). En wie weet wat we daarna nog gaan doen? Naar Utrecht, Bunnik, Zwammerdam, Aardenburg of Ermelo?
